As a dedicated mental health advocate and counsellor, I’ve come to value just how powerful open, honest conversations about mental health can be. This November, I’m embarking on a 30-day writing journey, sharing a new mental health article each day, not only to raise awareness but to raise funds for Movember.

It’s half way through November, and as you look around, moustaches of all shapes and sizes are sprouting on men’s faces around the world. This isn’t just about a new facial hair trend; it’s part of Movember, a global movement that raises awareness and funds for men’s health. Movember specifically focuses on three critical issues: mental health, suicide prevention, and physical health concerns like prostate and testicular cancer. But why do so many men participate, and what makes growing a moustache such a powerful way to support men’s mental health?

Let’s explore the roots of Movember, the importance of discussing men’s mental health, and how a moustache can help break down stigma around mental wellbeing.

The Origins and Mission of Movember

Movember began in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, when a small group of friends decided to bring the moustache back in style while raising awareness for men’s health issues. Since then, the initiative has become a global phenomenon, with millions of men and women supporting the cause each year. Movember’s mission is to “change the face of men’s health,” focusing on mental health, suicide prevention, and cancers that impact men. Through the simple act of growing a moustache, men are encouraged to become more engaged with their health and to spark important conversations around mental wellbeing.

Why Men Grow a Mo: Raising Awareness Through Action

Growing a moustache in November is a symbolic act that invites curiosity and starts conversations. For many men, it’s not just about making a fashion statement—it’s about making a difference. The moustache becomes a talking point, prompting questions from friends, family, and even strangers, which opens the door to discussing the serious issues Movember aims to address.

How You Can Support Movember

There are various ways to support Movember, including growing a moustache, hosting a fundraising event, or simply spreading awareness. If growing a moustache isn’t possible, consider organising an event like a “Mo-ment” with friends or family or participating in “Move for Movember” by committing to physical activity throughout the month. Raising awareness through social media or donating to Movember-affiliated projects are other impactful ways to support the cause.

Ask Open Questions: Invite conversation by asking questions that show genuine interest, such as, “How have you been feeling lately?”

Share Your Experiences: By sharing your own experiences with stress or mental health, you can help others feel less alone and more open to sharing.

Listen Without Judgement: Provide a supportive space by listening to others without interrupting or passing judgement.

Movember is about more than just moustaches. It’s a movement that uses a small gesture to make a big difference in men’s mental health.
