June is Pride Month, and it's a time of celebration, reflection, and solidarity for the LGBTQIA+ community. It's a period when we honour our history, celebrate our identities, and advocate for continued progress towards equality.

However, amidst the vibrant parades, colourful events, and joyful gatherings, it’s crucial to remember the importance of support—both receiving it and giving it. Let's explore the various types of support we all require during Pride Month and offer practical ways to support one another, fostering a stronger and more inclusive community. Often, in our busy worlds, we are only looking out for ourselves and forget to check in on others who may need support. By actively listening, showing empathy, and offering a helping hand, we can create a more compassionate and understanding environment for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month.

Why is June Pride Month?

June is celebrated as Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, a pivotal event in LGBTQIA+ history. On June 28, 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, resisted a police raid, sparking a series of protests and demonstrations. These events marked a significant turning point in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights, galvanising activists and leading to the formation of various advocacy groups. The bravery and resilience displayed during the Stonewall Riots ignited a global movement for equality and acceptance, making June a time to honour the progress made, remember the struggles endured, and continue the pursuit of justice for all.

Time for Emotional Support

Emotional support is foundational to the well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community, especially during Pride Month. Many individuals might be experiencing mixed emotions, from the joy of celebration to the pain of recalling past struggles. Here are some ways to provide and obtain emotional support:

Active Listening: Sometimes, the best support is simply being there to listen. Offer a non-judgmental ear to friends and family who may need to express their feelings. We often believe we have to fix everyone; however, the power of just being there and listening to a friend is priceless.

Validation: Acknowledge the experiences and feelings of others. Validating someone's emotions can provide immense comfort and reassurance especially if they are struggling.

Open Conversations: Encourage open and honest conversations about mental health and emotional well-being. Sharing personal stories can foster a sense of solidarity and understanding. I actively talk to men in the same situation as me and find community by showing my vulnerability and opening up about my personal demons. You will be amazed at how many others are struggling just like you.

Create Social Supports

Social support involves creating inclusive and welcoming spaces where everyone feels accepted and valued. During Pride Month, social support can manifest in various ways:

Inclusive Events: Organise and participate in events that are inclusive of all identities within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. Ensure that these events are accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities.

Community Building: Strengthen community bonds by supporting local LGBTQIA+ organisations and initiatives. Attend local meetings, volunteer, or donate to causes that resonate with your values. This month we're attending a beautiful space called loveguys, a peer-support group that runs every week to help queer masc individuals support one another and enjoy deeper friendships and connections.

Support Networks: Create or join support networks where individuals can connect, share resources, and offer mutual support. Online forums, social media groups, and local community centres can be great places to start. Provide Advocacy and Allyship

Advocacy and allyship are crucial components of support during Pride Month. Being an advocate means standing up for the rights and dignity of the LGBTQIA+ community, while allyship involves supporting and uplifting others. Here are some ways to engage in advocacy and allyship:

Educate yourself and others: Take the time to educate yourself about LGBTQIA+ issues and history. Share this knowledge with others to raise awareness and promote understanding.

Speak Up: Use your voice to advocate for equality and justice. Whether it's calling out discriminatory behaviour or supporting pro-LGBTQIA+ legislation, every action counts.

Amplify Marginalised Voices: Centre and amplify the voices of those within the community who are often marginalised, such as transgender individuals and people of colour. Ensure their stories and experiences are heard and respected.

Set Boundaries: Recognise your limits and set boundaries to protect your mental and emotional health. It’s okay to say no when you need to prioritise your well-being.

Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to seek support when you need it. Reach out to friends, family, or mental health professionals if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Practice self-care: Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, or practising mindfulness, self-care can help you recharge and stay resilient.
